Three Safe Ways to Thaw Frozen Food

By Gluten Cafe Kitchen · 21 July 2026

There are three safe thawing methods: in the refrigerator, in cold water, or in the microwave. Leaving frozen meat or other perishable food on the counter lets its surface warm while the centre remains frozen.

In the refrigerator

This is the easiest method to manage safely. Put the food on a plate or in a container on the lowest shelf so drips cannot reach other food. Allow plenty of time—a large item may need more than a day.

In cold water

Seal the food in a leak-proof bag and submerge it in cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes so it stays cold. Cook food immediately after thawing by this method.

In the microwave

Use the defrost setting and rotate or separate pieces as they soften. Cook immediately because some areas may begin to warm or cook during defrosting.

Some foods can be cooked directly from frozen if their recipe or package directions allow it; cooking will take longer. Always verify doneness with the appropriate temperature check.
